Courtyard
Standing in the courtyard which is dominated by three structures
you should first take a look at the large fortified wall. This is the west
wall, built by Sir Robert Hamilton in 1647.
The wall originally stretched down to
the shores of Provanhall loch which is now Auchinlea Park and
would have returned to merge with the East side of the hall
to form a large fortification.
Coat of Arms
You can see
the Hamilton coat of arms which has been engraved into the triangular
stone above the gate.
Blochairn House
Turning to the Southside of the courtyard we find the Newer
House. The first storey was built in 1727.
The
second level was built in 1760 by Dr Buchanan who altered the
whole facade of the building to replicate his plantation house
in Jamaica and then named the building Blochairn House.
Pre-reformation architecture
If you now turn to the north side of the courtyard and look at Provan Hall from the outside. The buildings structure dates from around 1460 and is an outstanding example of a pre-reformation mansion in Scotland.
External stair and doorway
To your right is the external stair and upstairs doorway which
were added when the fortified wall was constructed in 1647. Before
this the access to the dining hall was via an internal ladder
system in the turret.
Next feature in the tour is the Garden.
