2004 Easterhouse Festival at Auchinlea Park
Festival Day Huge Hit with Local Folk
Auchinlea Park was awash with colour on Saturday 31 July 2004 for the annual Easterhouse festival.
Easterhouse Festival Day proved to be a huge hit with a record breaking crowd of 4,500 local residents basking in glorious sunshine to enjoy local bands, puppet shows, exhibitions, dance and music performances.
Native American theme
The Festival, coordinated by Greater Easterhouse Arts Forum, brought a Native American theme to this year’s event with a spectacular tepee village and costume procession as well as the first chance to see a replica of the famous Ghost Dance Shirt (given back to the Lakota Sioux by Glasgow City Council in 1999).
James Dean, arts coordinator for Greater Easter Arts Team said. “We promised to create an event which offered something for everyone with the emphasis definitely on fun! From the feedback we’ve received I think we hit the mark. Live local bands proved to be extremely popular and showcased the fantastic talent that exists in the area while the Native American theme brought local children and community groups together to create Native American costumes and the tepee village.
Provanhall Heritage Group Exhibition
James continued: “The Provanhall Heritage group also got in on the day and mounted a terrific exhibition showing the parallels between Scottish and Native American cultures. Festival Day was all about getting local people involved to make it a real community affair-I think this year’s event went down a treat and has definitely helped to strengthen the community spirit within the area.
