GELN Food Hygiene Course
January 2011

Community representatives and volunteers took part in a two day food hygiene training course, learning skills they can utilise within their local organisations, and also pass on to family and friends.

Participants in the Food Hygiene Course arranged by Glasgow East Learning network for the local community.

This course is part of John Wheatley College’s commitment to the community, providing educational and training opportunities for people and organisations in the local area. The course was organised by the GELN Support Officer and funded by the Widening Access Fund. The participants were certificated by the Royal Environmental Hygiene Institute of Scotland.

Course content

As part of the course the participants were introduced to a general overview of food hygiene, food contamination, bacteria, equipment and utensils, food poisoning, preparation, cooking, cooling and preservation of foods, cleaning and disinfection, personal hygiene and the law relating to food hygiene.

Participants views

Mary Wood, a volunteer at the church of the Nazarene in Parkhead said,

“The teacher is excellent, although there are a lot of complex details in the main thrust of the course. It is good that the College runs classes like these for community volunteers because it is important that good practices in food hygiene, health and safety and are established”.

David Stewart from Dalmarnock Community Centre said;

“I cook with young people and work in a community shop so the skills I have learned are good to use and pass on. The teacher had a very friendly approach that helped me learn, there were no hassles. I would recommend this course to anyone working in a food preparation place”.
