Food Hygiene Course in Ruchazie Community Centre

Community representatives and volunteers in a range of roles took the opportunity to learn new skills in a food hygiene course, given in their local community centre and arranged by John Wheatley College. These skills can be put to use within their organisations and also be passed on to family and friends.

As part of the course the participants were introduced to a general overview of food hygiene, food contamination, bacteria, equipment and utensils, food poisoning, preparation, cooking, cooling and preservation of foods, cleaning and disinfections, personal hygiene and the law relating to food hygiene.

Scott Spence, Community Learning and Development worker from Glasgow Life said;

“The course will benefit the staff and volunteers, it’s good that these courses are free, some of the participants wouldn’t have been able to do them if they cost money. Community groups in Ruchazie, Calvay, Barlanark and Garthamlock will now be able to use cafe facilities. We can pass on some of the skills we have learned to the young people. I would recommend this, and other Widening Access funded courses to other community organisations.”

Pat Ward, from Ruchazie Community Centre Advisory Group said;

“It means I can help out at community events preparing food like sandwiches etc. It’s good because it doesn’t cost anything. We would like to see if we can get the community cafe up and running and this course will help. It might also bring in some more people to the centre.”

John Wheatley College is committed to providing community based adult education, through its Widening Access Fund, to community groups and local residents. The course was arranged by the John Wheatley College's Network Learning Support Officer brian McQuillan. The course was certificated by The Royal Environmental Hygiene Institute of Scotland.
